Scholarships


The Foundation's newest scholarship was established in memory of Dennis Bomgaars.

The Community Foundation of Greater Jackson operates several scholarship programs. The funds held by the Foundation include the following:

  • APWA Scholarship Fund
    The Mississippi Chapter of the American Public Works Association established its scholarship fund at the Foundation in 2000. The fund honors a full-time junior or senior at a public university in Mississippi studying to enter the field of public works. The student must have attended high school in Mississippi. This award is based both on merit and need. Application for 2008-2009 school year available here.

  • Dennis Bomgaars Memorial Scholarship Fund
    The Dennis Bomgaars Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in memory of the Iowa native who originally came to Mississippi to study at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson. After obtaining his Masters is Christian Education and Biblical Studies, he accepted the position as business manager of Mt. Salus Christian School in Clinton. With a special place in his heart for children, he mentored and trained young people for nearly 20 years through his work at the school and in his church. After he died of cancer in 2006, his family established the fund to provide an annual scholarship based on need to a student in or rising to grades 1 through 6 at Mt. Salus.

  • John Robert Boswell Memorial Scholarship Fund
    The John Robert Boswell Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in December 1999 by Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Boswell of Jackson in memory of their son John Robert Boswell, a National Merit Finalist and STAR Student at Jim Hill High School. A Carrier Scholar at Ole Miss, he was graduated in 1984 with a degree in chemical engineering and worked in the field until his death in 1993 of a brain tumor. The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding senior majoring in chemical engineering at Ole Miss. The recipient must be a full-time student and cannot belong to a social sorority or fraternity. This award is based both on merit and need. Applications available from Ole Miss Department of Chemical Engineering.

  • Harrison Clark Scholarship Awards Fund
    The Harrison Clark Scholarship Awards Fund was established in 1999 in memory of Harrison Hull Clark, a Madison Central High School student who died in 1998. The fund has awarded $5,000.00 to graduating seniors from Madison Central since 1999. The fund is the only endowed scholarship dedicated solely for the benefit of Madison Central High School students. The fund intends to award two $500 scholarships to the 2003 graduating class. Awards are intended for good students who have been active in the school and plan to attend a two or four-year college on a full time basis. Students with grade point averages of 2.75 or better and ACT scores of 19-25 are encouraged to apply. Awards are made strictly on merit. Applications available from MCHS Senior Counselor only.

  • Anthony "Tony" Gobar Juvenile Justice Scholarship Fund
    Established in 2005, The Anthony "Tony" Gobar Scholarship Fund is named in honor of Anthony Gobar of Jackson, a long-time juvenile justice advocate. The Fund will provide an annual cash scholarship based on both merit and need for a full-time junior or senior at a public university in Mississippi or Southern University in Louisiana majoring in criminal justice, political science or counseling. The student must have a stated career interest in juvenile justice or a similar field and have demonstrated a strong commitment to community and public service. Application available here.

  • Charles E. “Chuck” Griffin, Jr. Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund
    On October 20, 2005, a person racing on a south Jackson street lost control of his vehicle, which became airborne and left the road. At exactly this moment, Charles E. “Chuck” Griffin, Jr. was standing in front of his best friend’s home on that street. Chuck, who would have turned 19 the next day, was struck and killed. The Charles E. “Chuck” Griffin, Jr. Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund was established at the Foundation to honor the life of this talented young man. The fund will award annual scholarships to a graduating student at Jim Hill High School and to a graduating student at Hinds Community College who plans to continue his or her higher education at a four year institution. The fund will also provide an annual scholarship to a Tougaloo College graduate who has been accepted into the American Bar Association Council on Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO) program.

  • Bill Hunsberger Scholarship Fund
    William W. Hunsberger, publisher of The Clarion-Ledger newspaper and a board member of the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson, died of an unexpected heart attack in 2004. In his honor, his family and friends established the Bill Hunsberger Scholarship Fund, which rotates annually among a female, upperclassman journalism major at the University of Southern Mississippi, journalism major at the University of Mississippi, and political science major involved with student media at Mississippi State University. Applications available from USM Journalism Department for 2008-2009 school year.

  • Ryan Kirkpatrick Memorial Scholarship Fund
    The Ryan Kirkpatrick Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2003 in memory of Ryan Kirkpatrick, a Madison Central High School student who died in a car accident that year. Ryan had won a national award for wildlife photography and was also a filmmaker who had photographed plants and animals in the Amazon, an amateur horticulturist who raised orchids and bromeliads and a bass player for Plaid, a rock band he and his brother Sean started. The scholarship, for Madison Central seniors, is aimed at those with an interest in the natural sciences. Applications available from MCHS senior counselor.

  • Robert E. Luckett Memorial Scholarship Fund
    When Rankin County School District director of special projects Robert E. Luckett died in February 2002, his family looked for a way to honor him and his lifelong dedication to education and children. His wife, Jeanne, and their son, Robby, created the Robert E. Luckett Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation to honor graduates of Richland High School, where Mr. Luckett served as principal for 19 years. This award is based on a combination of merit, need and teacher recommendation. Please contact RHS school counselor for applications.

  • Mae Meriwether Zifcak Girl Scout Scholarship Fund
    This fund was established in mid-2001 by the Middle Mississippi Girl Scouts Council in honor of Ms. Mae Meriwether Zifcak. The scholarship assists young women from Mississippi receive post-secondary education, primarily at trade schools. Applicants must be a registered Senior Girl Scout of the Girl Scout Council of Middle Mississippi at the time of the application. Applications are available through senior Girl Scout leaders or the program director at the Girl Scout Council of Mississippi. Please contact the Girl Scout Council of Middle Mississippi Program Director for applications.
