There are more than 700 community foundations across the country holding nearly $40 billion in assets. Community foundations act as "savings accounts" for the areas they serve. Earnings from endowment funds and pass-through gifts are distributed to a diverse range of community interests, which include, in the case of the Community Foundation of Greater Jackson, arts and humanities, community building, education, environment, families and children, health, and areas of particular interest to individual donors.
